Vocal Jazz

Now in its 20th season, Roxbury Vocal Jazz enjoyed a very successful year in 2017-2018, winning second place Jazz Choir AA with a Gold rating at the WorldStrides OnStage Music Festival in Washington, D.C. In 2017, the group was awarded second place Jazz Choir with a Superior rating at the Dorney Park Music in the Parks Festival. In 2016, the group received first place Jazz Choir Open Division with a Superior rating at the Williamsburg/VA Beach Music Festival. In 2013, the group was honored to perform with the Grammy Award winning New York Voices. Vocal Jazz has previously received high awards at the Boston Heritage Music Festival, Fiesta-val in Williamsburg, VA, the Virginia Beach Music Festival, Music in the Parks at Great Adventure and Dorney Park, and Music in the Parks in Richmond, VA.

Both Revelation and Vocal Jazz compete as vocal jazz ensembles, explor- ing new and challenging styles of music, including jazz, pop, gospel, and improvisation. Revelation and Vocal Jazz have had the honor of working with some of the top vocal jazz artists in the country.

Singers for Revelation and Vocal Jazz will be auditioned in October of this year. Auditioning singers must be members of a curricular choir to be eligi- ble. Students are chosen based upon their musical audition (tone quality, intonation, musicianship, ability to hold parts independently, preparation, and stage presence) and their attitude (ability to work with others, reliability, enthusiasm, and dependability.)

The students chosen for Revelation or Vocal Jazz must be willing to give extra time and work hard towards the group’s goals. If a student is chosen for either of the jazz choirs, he or she is responsible for being present at all rehearsals and performances listed in this book.
